Historic Downtown

Historical Tourism

Downtown Sonora is rich in history and heritage. Anchored by the stunningly restored Sutton County Courthouse and the Old Ice House Ranch Museum, you'll find plenty of attractions within walking distance including the John & Mildred Cauthorn Memorial Depot, the Miers Home Museum, the Community Prayer Garden, shopping and dining.

John & Mildred Cauthorn Depot

The Santa Fe Depot, built in 1930, watched over the busy stock shipping activities that tied the economy of Sutton County to the rest of the nation. In 1977 the last Sonora train whistled itself into History and the depot remained vacant until 1986 when the Sutton County Historical Society received the old building as a donation. Through donations by the Vanderstucken family, the John and Mildred Cauthorn Trust, and hundreds of other contributions it was renovated into a community meeting place. The outdoor amphitheater is located behind the Depot.

Miers Home Museum

Built in 1888 by Isaac Miers, this home was only the fifth structure built in Sonora. After being shot in a dispute over water at the town well, Isaac stumbled back to his house where he died. The home was donated to the Sutton County Historical Society and is now a museum containing artifacts and memorabilia from Sonora’s past.

Community Prayer Garden

Located in Sonora at the end of N. Concho Ave., peace and tranquility awaits you at the wonderful Community Prayer Garden. Built by the loving people of this town and with the funding assistance of many local businesses. Take a moment of your day to visit.
